New Graduate Nurse Practitioner Checklist

Graduation is an exciting and busy time! Between finishing classes and clinicals, taking and passing your board exam, finding a job, and celebrating all you’ve accomplished, your mind is full. Today I’m sharing a New Graduate Nurse Practitioner Checklist that you can use to make sure you’re on track with all of the different milestones and steps that we must go through before starting our first job. At the bottom of the article, you’ll be able to download your own copy.

New Graduate Nurse Practitioner Checklist

> 3 months to graduation

  • Review your school and program’s requirements for graduation – make sure you’re on track and have time to fix any issues
  • Prepare a resume
  • Prepare a general cover letter
  • Get your professional references in order – who are they? Have you asked them to serve as references yet?

1-3 months before graduation

  • Decide which certification body you want to go through 
  • Download syllabi – some states may require you to submit these with your license application if you attended school out of state
  • Apply for an RN license in the state you want to practice
  • Decide which study methods you want to use (review courses) 
  • Consider applying for jobs 

Less than 1 month to graduation

After Graduation

  • Send official transcripts to the certifying board (ANCC or AANP)
  • Apply for an APRN license with your State Board of Nursing and send official transcripts
  • Await your authorization to test
  • Schedule your certification exam
  • Take and pass your exam! 
  • Ensure results are sent to your State Board of Nursing
  • Submit your application for your NPI once you have your APRN license 
  • Apply for your Board of Pharmacy license 
  • Apply for DEA license (after APRN license and prescriptive authority)
